VETS in the ARTS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging and equipping veterans to tell their stories through music, performance, painting, sculpture, creative writing, and all other forms of artistic expression and at every level of participation.  Read about our production of STANDARD ISSUE  the musical and listen to the original cast recording on all streaming platforms!

Week 1: Story & Basics

Intro to songwriting and storytelling

First steps toward writing original lyrics

Beginner guitar fundamentals

 

Week 2: Song Ideas & Structure

Song organization

Turning ideas into verse and choruses

Guitar chord progressions

 

Week 3: Melody & Style

Melody writing

Refining original songs

Guitar rhythm and melodies

 

Week 4: Finalize & (Optional) Share

Finalizing songs

Performing/presenting tips

Optional sharing in low-pressure setting

The equipment listed below are recommended to get the most out of the class. Contact Brian Martinez at velocityrecordingstudio@gmail.com with questions regarding equipment specifics.

Equipment List (*recommended)

  • Instrument - (Guitar/Piano) + instrument cable.

  • Microphone- Any Microphone that uses XLR cables to attach to interface. Dynamic(*SM58) or condenser (*Rode NT1) + 10-25’ XLR cable.

  • Interface - Any 1 or 2 input interface with usb, a XLR/instrument jack and headphone output. (*Focusrite 2i2)

  • Headphones - Any closed back headphones.(Audio Technica ATH-M20)

  • Laptop(Mac/Windows) - must meet minimum requirements for Reaper. Download and install software prior to class. https://www.reaper.fm/download.php
